All UK health departments ‘ready’ for revalidation to start this year

The UK Revalidation Programme Board (UKRPB) has confirmed that all four countries of the UK are ready to support the introduction of revalidation later this year.

Revalidation will regulate licensed doctors every five years through regular appraisals, to ensure high quality standards are being maintained.

Health departments in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have sent the UKRPB statements of their readiness to proceed.

The General Medical Council (GMC) will now consider these statements, along with its own readiness assessment, at a council meeting to be held on Thursday September 27.

The GMC will agree on its decision at this meeting as to whether it should recommend to health secretary Jeremy Hunt that revalidation should begin later this year. Hunt will then make the final decision.

Professor Sir Peter Rubin, chair of the GMC, said: “This is an important step on the way to starting revalidation. I look forward to receiving Sir Keith’s letter and to discussing it at our Council meeting next week.”
