Caring for the future
The decision to funnel nearly £1.5 million to 79 local projects helping carers is welcome, and a much better idea than setting up a new service or board to distribute the money while also using it up.
Carers were struggling in many parts of the country even before the cuts and many local authorities are choosing to shut day centres and community facilities which offered support. Many others are introducing means testing and hiking charges for respite care.
The Department of Health seems to be taking a gradually larger role in care in this country – and judging by some of the priorities and funding decisions of councils, this is no bad thing.
