CQC appoints new deputy chief inspector of hospitals
The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has appointed Nigel Acheson as deputy chief inspector of hospitals.
Having trained in Birmingham and appointed as consultant gynaecological oncologist in 2002, Dr Acheson will join the CQC in autumn where he will report to chief inspector of hospitals, Professor Ted Baker.
Currently, NHS England’s regional director and higher level responsible officer for the South NHS, Dr Acheson had previously worked at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital to help develop the gynaecological cancer centre.
Prof Baker said: “I am delighted that Nigel will be joining CQC at this important time in our inspection programme. He brings to CQC a wealth of experience and a track record of professional and clinical leadership.
“In his previous roles, Nigel has been a consistent champion of clinical safety and quality and will make a significant contribution to CQC’s work in these areas.”
Dr Acheson will take up the post left vacant following Professor Baker’s appointment as chief inspector of hospitals last year. His appointment was made following open competition.
As a national advisor and clinical lead to the Department of Health’s enhanced recovery partnership programme, Dr Acheson has actively promoted the involvement of patients as partners in their care.
While medical director for the Peninsula Cancer Network in the South West of England, he helped to re-establish the patient and public group, with the chair and vice-chair becoming members of the network board.
