Derby Hospitals improves A&E and routine care waiting times

Derby Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has made “significant improvements” in waiting times for emergency and routine care, Monitor has announced. The additional condition that had been put on the trust’s licence has now been removed.

Trust chief executive Sue James said: “We are delighted to have been able to reduce waiting times in our A&E department and this is a process we began as a priority before Monitor’s latest intervention.

“Turning this situation around is a real achievement for us and it is testament to the efforts, determination and passion of all our staff who have worked tirelessly to help us meet the A&E targets over a sustained period of more than a year.”

However Monitor says the trust is still in breach of its licence in regards to its financial situation. It ended the fiscal year 2013-2014 with a deficit of over £15m and forecasts are projecting that this will grow to as much as £23m by the end of 2014-2015.

Monitor has made an agreement with the trust that it will develop a comprehensive financial recovery plan by 31 January 2015.

Adam Cayley, regional director at Monitor, said: “More patients are being seen quickly at the city’s A&E departments which is really good news. The challenge is now to get on top of the trust’s financial deficit which is worrying.

“We want the trust to develop a financial recovery plan, demonstrating to us how it will solve its financial problems while safeguarding the quality services which local people expect.”
