Former home of medical society that inspired NHS up for sale
The former medical centre said to have inspired the founding of the NHS is up for sale, it has been reported.
The BBC said that the system of healthcare run from Number Ten, The Circle in Blaenau Gwent, which once housed the offices of the Tredegar Workmen’s Medical Aid Society, was used as a model for the NHS by Aneurin Bevan.
The Labour health minister was born in Tredegar and leader of the town council, Malcolm Cross, told the BBC about the ‘for sale’ sign that had gone up outside the building.
He said: “It’s difficult, we don’t want to lose it, because of its heritage. We’ll try to see if someone could step in to buy it, to keep it and protect this heritage.”
The council is set to meet today to discuss the building’s sale.
