Live web-stream of GMC-hosted event on fairer regulation

The General Medical Council (GMC) is hosting a conference today to explore emerging issues across healthcare regulation.

‘Being Fair: challenges and opportunities’, is being chaired by Dame Julie Mellor, the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman, and is the first of its kind organised by the GMC.

More than 140 attendees from organisations including the BMA, the Department of Health, the medical royal colleges and other healthcare regulators, will discuss the shared challenges in this area and how to address them, including doctors’ progression, revalidation, the medical register, and complaints.

Speakers include Elisabeth Davies, chair of the Legal Services Consumer Panel; Professor Sir Peter Rubin, chair of the GMC; and Dean Royles, director of NHS Employers.

Niall Dickson, GMC chief executive, said: “Fairness needs to be at the heart of everything we do from inspecting education provision to assessing overseas applicants for registration. And when it comes to complaints about doctors they need to feel that they will be treated fairly and patients need to know their safety will always come first.

“Our ability to protect patients relies on maintaining this trust which is why we have brought together a range of leaders in health to explore what more we can do to be fair and how we can support each other in achieving this.”

The conference is being web-streamed live: www.presenta.co.uk/GMC/Beingfair/live
