Managers fail to recognise PTSD symptoms, charity warns

A new white paper seeks to inform managers about the potential impact of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD, in the workplace.

Published by the charity PTSD Resolution, the paper ‘Trauma in the Workplace’ describes how the disorder could affect staffing policies and practices.

Their research suggests that most managers are unable to recognise the symptoms of PTSD and so have created a half-day course in Trauma Awareness Training for Employees (TATE).

The course enables managers to recognise post-traumatic symptoms, understand the effects of trauma on staff behaviour, engage with traumatised people to identify practical options and find a clear route to resolving workplace difficulties caused by trauma.

Colonel Gauvain, a trauma therapist and chairman of PTSD Resolution, said: “Mental health disorders account for one in five of all work days lost and cost UK employers £25bn each year. Trauma in particular can result in depression and behavioural problems for employees. Left untreated, the condition may cause avoidable accidents, extended sick-leave and dismissal – and represents a major legal liability for the employer.”

The white paper is available at: www.ptsdresolution.org/Trauma_Awareness_Training.pdf
