Minimum alcohol price a ‘very small step’
The Government has been firming up its plans for minimum alcohol price levels per unit on the urging of health campaigners.
The proposed minimum would mean lager could not be sold for less than 38-78p, depending on its strength, or a litre bottle of vodka for less than £10.71.
Professor Ian Gilmore, of the Royal College of Physicians said such a “small step” would have no practical effect on public health, and the BMA and Alcohol Concern also said the price should be higher.
Alcohol producers say it is a “pragmatic solution” but that the higher minimum price per unit demanded by some would alienate the public.
