New GMC director promises to ‘build on reforms’
The new director of education and standards at the General Medical Council (GMC) has promised to further pursue the body’s programme of reform as he takes office.
It was announced today that Dr Colin Melville, currently the Head of Medical Education at Lancaster University and Head of Lancaster Medical School, will take up the new post.
He promised to pursue the GMC’s reform programme, including the development of a medical licensing assessment, making standards more accessible, and working closely with educational and other organisations in all four parts of the UK.
Dr Melville said: “I am delighted to be joining the GMC and look forward to working with colleagues within the organisation and all those with an interest in this area to build on the reforms of recent years.”
Dr Melville has been a consultant in intensive care medicine for over twenty years and has also worked at Hull York Medical School and North Yorkshire East Coast Foundation School.
Niall Dickson, the outgoing chief executive of the GMC, said: “We are delighted to welcome Colin on board – he will have a crucial role working with the profession, educational bodies and employers in shaping medical education throughout the UK and in maintaining its place as a world leader, as well as making sure the professional standards we set for doctors are relevant, accessible and appropriate.”
The GMC announced recently that it is piloting several schemes to reduce the number of unnecessary fitness to practice investigations.
