NHS Blood and Transplant agree deal for technology and communications services

NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) is partnering with BT in order to fully digitise its services, including records and bookings that will be stored in the cloud.

The cloud is updated in real time, meaning it will save time and make records accessible as soon as they are uploaded.

Currently, NHSBT’s appointment system and donor list are digital, it is hoped that this move will allow them to make frontline processes digital as well.

David Suttie, Accountable Executive at NHSBT, said:

“There will be many benefits to the new technology solution. It will allow us to collect IT data more effectively, help donors move through the process quicker and reduce paperwork. This will be a positive outcome for our blood donation sessions.”

Various pieces of physical technology will be provided as part of the deal including hand-held scanners, to record data on the donor, and tablets that can be used during appointments to quickly update records.

50 mobile teams currently exist in England, with an additional 23 fixed locations across the country.

BT’s 4G network will be supporting the mobile teams so that they can stay up to date with the cloud.

A pilot phase will roll out in the coming months and the contract with will run for 3 years, with the possibility of a further extension.

Danny Longbottom, director of Local Government and Health at BT, said:

“The work of NHS Blood and Transplant is integral to the NHS. We’re delighted to be able to further the work we do with the NHS and help transform the blood donation service by providing faster connectivity and support.”
