NHS fraud cases rise during recession

Anti-fraud operatives in the NHS are dealing with more than a third more cases than three years ago.

Figures from the NHS Counter Fraud service show the number of cases of potential fraud detected and investigated rising over recent years, from 351 in 2007/8 to 482 last year.

But the service said it showed better reporting and awareness of fraud, and said more than £65m had been recovered.

Common scams include timesheet fraud, patients lying to avoid prescription charges, and contractors overcharging the NHS for work.

The organisation’s head of operations, Allan Carter, speaking to The Times newspaper, said that “in times of recession people will look to maximise their opportunities”.

Call NHS Counter Fraud on 020 7895 4500. Contact details for the regional and specialist teams are at: www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/CounterFraud/377.aspx
