NHS pay analysis published – HSCIC
Detailed data on NHS staff pay has been published by the Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC).
Pay rose slightly in 2012, but by a smaller amount than in 2011. The average basic pay for a full-time worker in the 12 months to September was £29,316 – a £379 (1.3%) increase on the 12 months to September 2011.
This compares to a £722, or 2.6% increase between 2010 and 2011.
The information has been broken down by staff group within NHS hospitals and community health services, including basic pay and overall earnings, as well as additional payments per person.
In 2012, the average basic pay for doctors was £58,456, a 1.4% rise on 2011. Nurses earned £30,481 on average, a 0.7% rise, and NHS infrastructure support staff earned an average of £27,270, up by 1.4%.
Scientific, therapeutic and technical staff earned £34,354 on average, up 0.4%, support clinical staff earned £18,351 on average, up 1.6%, and qualified ambulance staff earned £26,446, up 0.6%.
HSCIC chief executive Tim Straughan said: “As the NHS employs more than a million people in England, its composition is obviously of great interest to the health service and public alike.
“Today’s figures are intended to provide new insight into the average earnings of this workforce, which of course contains a complex mix of differing grades of experience and working patterns.
“Although they are experimental, the figures do point to a small increase in average basic pay for most staff groups between 2011 and 2012.”
