Private providers could access NHS pension scheme
The NHS pension scheme could be extended to staff working for private companies and charities from April 2014.
The government has launched a consultation on the proposals, which are based on a recommendation by Monitor, to provide a more level pension scheme for health workers.
Any costs would be borne by new employers to extend the scheme, and the move has had support from the RCN and NHS Partner’s Network.
Monitor stated: “All staff working in NHS funded healthcare services should have access to the NHS pension scheme, not just those currently working for the public sector.
Patricia Suarez of the NHS Partner's Network, which speaks for private companies working within the NHS, said: “These very welcome proposals will help create a more level playing field where staff have fewer obstacles to moving between organisations.”
Dr Peter Carter, chief executive & general secretary of the RCN said: “This is good news for health care staff and we are pleased that ministers have listened to the RCN’s call for wider access to the NHS pension scheme.
“The RCN has argued for some time that it is right for all nursing staff providing NHS-funded care to be eligible for the NHS pension scheme, and these proposals are a positive step towards that. We look forward to responding to the consultation and hope that these proposals become a reality.”
