RCN votes against pension proposals

Nurses have joined other health professionals in rejecting the Government’s latest offer on public sector pension proposals.

In the Royal College of Nursing’s (RCN) ballot, almost two thirds voted against the offer, albeit on a low turnout of only 16% (65,759).

The RCN stated that its main concern was for workers continuing in a physically demanding job until they were 68. This raised age of retirement would take effect in 2046.

Kath McCourt, who chairs the RCN Council, said: “While the members who voted expressed a clear view, showing their anger at the Government proposals, we are disappointed that more of our members did not take the opportunity to vote.

“We will now, as a matter of urgency, meet with other unions who are at varying stages in their own member consultations.”
