Services not commissioned for quality, Manchester FTs warn
Cancer commissioning in Greater Manchester is being investigated by Monitor following complaints by Foundation Trusts.
University Hospital of South Manchester NHS Foundation Trust and Stockport NHS Foundation Trust say that cancer surgery services are not being commissioned on quality of services, patient outcomes or preferences.
Monitor will establish if the new processes to select providers are within procurement and competition rules, gathering information and reviewing the evidence.
Jonathan Blackburn, Monitor's legal director for co-operation and competition said: “We are at the very early stages of this investigation and so it is too early for us to reach a view as to whether any rules have been breached.
“The purpose of our investigation is to assess whether the way in which cancer surgery services are being reorganised is in the interests of patients in Greater Manchester.”
