Together for Mental Health launched in Wales

The Welsh Government has launched a new mental health strategy, ‘Together for Mental Health’. The strategy is a 10-year plan to improve outcomes for service users, families and the wider population.

It aims to promote mental wellbeing and prevent problems from developing. The Government has pledged to deliver improved information for the public and to increase service user involvement in care decisions.

The strategy will help to develop a fully integrated network of care, based on recovery and enablement, and will try to address mental health needs across all age groups, “from cradle to grave”.

Minister for health and social services, Lesley Griffiths said: “One in four people will experience mental illness at some point in their lives. This can be triggered by bereavement, a trauma or even constantly worrying about money. In these days of financial austerity, we need to have more resilience to deal with the everyday pressures we face.

“Together for Mental Health is our commitment to do all we can to ensure we help people in Wales enjoy good mental health and wellbeing and those with mental ill-health are given all the support possible to recover and lead fulfilling lives.”

David Crepaz-Keay, who leads the Mental Health Foundation's work in Wales, said: “This strategy is a major step forward for everyone in Wales affected by mental ill health. We are particularly pleased that this is a whole government strategy, with a clear focus on people's lives, not their diagnoses. But it is important that the promises in the strategy are delivered.”
