CQC welcomes improvements at Cornwall Partnership NHS Trust

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has welcomed improvements at Cornwall Partnership NHS Foundation Trust following an inspection.

Cornwall Partnership NHS Foundation Trust took over the provision of community health services previously provided by Peninsula Community Health, a community interest company, in April 2016 and this was the second inspection of the trust following that change.

A team of inspectors from CQC visited the trust during March and April 2019 to check the quality of specialist community mental health services for children and young people, older people’s mental health wards and community based mental health services for adults of working age.

The team also looked at all of the community health services at this inspection, including community hospitals, minor injuries units and end of life care.

It has rated the trust as Outstanding for caring and Good for safe, effective, responsive. Overall the trust is now rated as Good.

Karen Bennett-Wilson, head of hospital inspection and lead for mental health at CQC, said: "Cornwall Partnerships NHS Foundation Trust was rated as Requires Improvement at its last inspection.

"The trust has worked hard to regain the standard of care it provided before it acquired community services which were previously provided by Peninsula Community Health Community Interest Company. While I recognise that it can be difficult to take on new services in this way, the trust has managed over the last year to integrate and merge the services successfully into one organisation.

“At the time of the inspection we immediately raised our concerns regarding the trust's CAMHS services to its board, who have now taken steps to put improvements in place. We will monitor the trust closely and follow these issues up at our next inspection to review the progress made.

“Our rating of Outstanding for the caring key question is again a tribute to the trust’s frontline staff; who we found to be caring and conscientious."
