NHS boss steps into speed camera row

The chief executive of NHS Bristol, Deborah Evans, has written to Avon and Somerset Police asking speed cameras to be switched back on after the local road safety partnership collapse due to slashed funding from councils.

The police pointed out that the cameras remain the responsibility of councils, urging Evans to speak to the local authorities instead.

Evans said: “We know that speed cameras help to save lives and right across the country over the last ten years deaths on the roads have dropped. So this is a very effective public safety message and we simply want to have a conversation with the police. We want to talk with them over whether there are other options.”

A police spokesman said that if local authorities could find funding for the cameras, the police would process the fines.
