New whistleblowing guidance published

New guidance on whistleblowing has been published by the Social Partnership Forum.

The document was developed in response to issues raised in a number of high profile cases, such as the Healthcare Commission's investigation into emergency care at Mid-Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust and builds on previously issued NHS advice.

The RCN is a member of the Social Partnership Forum which brings together NHS Employers, trade unions and the Department of Health in England to debate and involve partners in the development and implementation of the workforce implications of policy. It aims to promote partnership working at all levels of the NHS. The document was developed with the charity Public Concern at Work .

RCN Senior Employment Relations Adviser Gerry O’Dwyer says: “I hope the guidance will be of interest to RCN members across the UK. The intention is to develop a section of the UK Agenda for Change handbook which will also address this issue.

“This report focuses on how employers should manage whistleblowing and we, as a staff side, have sought to maximise trade union engagement.”
