Avoiding a shortfall
Whose responsibility is it when an organisation’s expenditure in performing its necessary duties is not matched by its income?
The Nursing & Midwifery Council is blunt in explaining its desire for a big rise in registrants’ fees, to £120, saying that otherwise its shortfall in income will compromise patient safety. It also says it has been rigorous in searching for efficiencies in its operations, including internal constraint on pay.
The NMC is, by design, separate from Government, and it is calling on registrants to pay rather than for a taxpayers’ cash injection. Unions representing the health workers who will be affected have said this is the wrong approach. Who is right?
