Blame on both sides
Cynthia Bower, chief executive of the CQC, has resigned, coinciding with the release of a Government report on the organisation.
The organisation has been under much criticism for underestimating the scale of its task and for failing to highlight the amount of difficulty it was having conducting inspections whilst merging organisations and setting up a brand new regime.
But although the CQC should have spoken up earlier and louder, to receive the necessary help to achieve its goals, the Government and the Department of Health also have their share of the blame.
They should have understood the extent of the challenges facing the CQC and acted to support the organisation more effectively. They could have noticed problems before they reached such a damaging level.
Lessons must be learnt from this to take the CQC and DH forward, working together.
