Drawing the line
Should prescription charges in England be abolished? Is this even achievable in principle?
The increase in charges means that healthcare will now be more expensive, especially for those who are often ill.
The money raised undoubtedly goes back to fund patient services; but surely prescriptions, wigs and dental treatment are important parts of care as well.
How can a line be drawn between what patients are required to pay for and what is the NHS’ duty to provide free at the point of care?
If patients are unwilling or unable to pay these fees, they will effectively be denied care. This is something that could detriment their health further, potentially causing a greater burden on the NHS in the future as minor problems escalate.
