Let’s talk about it
Would regular questioning from doctors, nurses and even dentists deter patients from seeking help in the first place?
Discussion about lifestyle factors can already lead to embarrassment, unwillingness to talk and even lying as a defense mechanism. Perhaps if this was increased, it would have a detrimental effect on people who simply don’t wish to discuss their weight, diet, drinking or smoking habits.
It seems an extreme approach, especially when the initial conversation may be about something completely separate from these lifestyle factors, or if the patient has to see their healthcare professional frequently.
However, it must be acknowledged that these factors are causing huge problems for the NHS, the economy and particularly the patients. If these questions can become a natural part of visiting the doctor, and can become accepted as questions to answer truthfully and willingly, the effect it could have on the public’s health would be phenomenal.
If we don’t talk about these unpleasant or sensitive topics, they become hidden, ignored and thus both the health service and the patient fail to prevent larger problems before they reach critical stage.
