No compromise
Does the low turnout in union ballots on public sector and NHS pensions demonstrate a belated acceptance of the Government’s reforms as the best course of action in the interests of the long-term health of public finances – or is this simply an acknowledgement that there is no use in fighting anymore?
The lack of engagement suggests members of these unions realise that despite the strikes and the discussions, the opposition and the concerns, the Government will not budge on this issue.
Sustaining a battle against such authority is difficult, especially when it becomes more and more evident that there will be no compromises.
Whilst it is undoubtedly important for the workforce to demonstrate its disapproval of changes, knowing when to retreat and focus their efforts on different challenges is also necessary.
