Productivity, not cuts
The massive target of £20bn efficiency savings has been criticised today for the lack of clarity concerning its origins.
If savings are primarily being generated through cuts and pay freezes, this does not constitute an example of productivity, and will not improve services in any way.
As this money is set to be reinvested into the NHS, removing it in this manner is illogical. Why make cuts if the aim is to put this money straight back into the health service? This model eliminates any form of progress and instead turns into an exercise in PR.
£20bn savings sounds impressive. If this amount can be raised, it will be politically advantageous, yet the details behind the savings are far more important than hitting an arbitrary target.
