Regulating the regulator
Following severe criticism against the CQC for its failure to regulate care homes effectively, now the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) has fallen under fire for its failure to keep up to date with the huge pile of complaints and hearings, dating back years.
Again, this showcases a critical failure of care that could potentially place patients at risk – but definitely diminishes public confidence and trust in the health service.
The issues appear to be similar, with a workload that has become unmanageable, and an organisation that battles on to try and solve multiple challenges.
Hopefully, the CHRE’s latest report and new leadership will give the necessary momentum to start improving regulation of nurses and midwives and develop an achievable strategy to clear the backlog.
