Treating the root of the problem
The NHS must recognise the significance of mental health issues in homelessness, and how people with multiple needs must be supported.
These complicated cases require specialist care delivered consistently, complete with an understanding of the problems that may lead to additional negative consequences.
Poor mental health should be prioritised for treatment, regardless of the circumstances of the patient.
Sometimes symptoms that could be misinterpreted as harmless can mask deeper problems, especially if the person in question is rarely offered support.
Hopefully the new report published by the NHS Confederation and St Mungo’s will help medical professionals to gain a greater understanding of these issues and the correlation between mental health and homelessness.
