Back the bill
The backing of Barwell’s anti-discriminatory bill demonstrates a huge step forward for the Government, whilst simultaneously highlighting the vast challenges still to be overcome in making mental health an openly discussed part of life, on a par with physical health, rather than something to be punished for.
The cross-party support on Friday proved a moment of relief for charities and health organisations who have been battling for change.
Barwell himself described the current law as the “last legal form of discrimination”. While this may be debateable – discrimination remains rife in a number of sectors – it is a clear victory for both those with mental health issues, and those who could stand to benefit from their political skill and expertise.
Hopefully this is a sign of the times, and will lead to further advancements in the drive towards equality for mental health.
