Blurring the boundaries
The Government is to introduce a requirement for trainee nurses to spend up to a year delivering basic care to patients before they take on clinical duties.
Taking the time to focus on washing, feeding and treating patients more like people, could be a good step towards a workforce that embeds dignity, compassion and respect into the entire organisation.
Healthcare assistants themselves will come under regulation and new standards, and will be offered improved training to deliver a higher standard of care.
But will this blur the line between nurses and healthcare assistants – and is this a good thing?
