Breaking the fall
The ageing population can present a significant challenge for the NHS, particularly through falls and the fractures and lack of independence which often accompany this.
But recent research shows that reducing the risk of falls in the over-65s can be easily implemented, low-cost and highly effective.
Instructor-led exercise classes which focus on improving strength, flexibility and balance can increase physical fitness levels, confidence and minimise the risk of falls.
The NHS must pay attention to such schemes, and seriously consider the human and cost savings that could be achieved by keeping older people healthier for longer.
