CCGs share best practice on mental health commissioning

Learning from the first mental health commissioning programme is being shared today at a conference for CCGs.

The Primary Care Mental Health Leadership Development Programme was developed by NHS England in partnership with UCL Partners Academic Science Health Partnership.

The programme covers personal and strategic leadership development; epidemiology and strategic needs assessment; national and international best practice; the clinical evidence base on what works; value-based service improvement and change management; commissioning tools and techniques; contract levers, CQUINs and penalties, partnership and collaboration; performance and information management, user and carer engagement; and the new NHS and social care landscape.

Dr Geraldine Strathdee, NHS England national clinical director of mental health, said: “The creation of clinical commissioning groups is a tremendous opportunity to look at new ways of working and drive forward excellence in commissioning and delivery of services at a local and regional level.

“We have an exceptional group of staff in the London CCGs who are eager to not only rise to the challenge of taking on the responsibility of mental health commissioning but drive innovation and improve standards so that we can see a real improvement in outcomes for patients.

“The overarching aim of the programme is to provide support for the development of a more sustainable managed network that will support primary care mental health leadership and be influential in driving improvements in mental health across London, in both areas of commissioning and mental health service provision.”
