CQC: NHS trust still ‘requires improvement’ three years after last inspection

An NHS trust that runs hospitals in North and East Hertfordshire has been told by the CQC that its services, overall, require improvement.

East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust has been told that, despite its services rated as ‘good’ for caring, the trust must do a better job overall – with its safety, effectiveness, responsiveness and leadership all rated as ‘requires improvement.’

The provider received the same overall rating at its last inspection in 2015, but has made improvements since and noted that this rating was anticipated despite the fact that over 70% of the areas reviewed by the CQC thus far have been rated as ‘good’ or better.

The trust’s chief executive, Nick Carver, said there was still plenty to be done as the trust implements its action plan, which has been agreed with by the CQC.

“At this stage in the trust’s development, the CQC’s findings are a fair assessment. I was particularly pleased that overall we continue to be rated as good for caring, as this is at the heart of our patients’ experience,” he added.

“Moreover, the improvements made by our emergency medicine colleagues saw the Lister’s emergency department improve its rating from inadequate in 2016 to good across all areas inspected. Our maternity team colleagues also made great progress, now rated good overall. Significant improvements were also seen at the Mount Vernon Cancer Centre.”
