Culpability
Despite fury among campaigners and relatives of those who died at Stafford hospital, many health professionals and now MPs too, it seems unlikely Sir David Nicholson is about to lose his job.
Support from David Cameron was vital, of course, but so too is the relative speed with which the scandal and Francis report has dropped out of the news headlines. The kind of media pressure needed to topple someone as senior and savvy as Nicholson needs to be more sustained and relentless than what we’ve seen.
The Francis report did not make him directly culpable or urge his resignation, which would have been a whole different matter – Sir David seems safe for now.
