Sir David Behan appointed new Health Education England chair

Sir David Behan has been appointed as the new chair of Health Education England (HEE).

The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) announced that the former chief executive of the CQC will chair HEE for three years, starting from 1 December this year.

Behan stepped down from his role at the CQC in July after six years leading the regulator, which has now appointed Ian Trenholm as its new chief executive.

The role at the HEE will involve a time commitment of two to three days per week with remuneration for the role at a rate of £63,000 per year.

The DHSC said the appointment was made on merit and that political activity played no part in the decision.

Behan announced in January that he was stepping down from his role at the CQC in January to give the regulator’s bosses time to find a replacement.

He said: “It's been an immense privilege to serve the public by leading the CQC, and I am incredibly proud of what we have achieved.”

Behan said he was especially proud of the State of Care publication, recognised as an authoritative review of the quality of England’s health and care services, but said it was now time to move on and contribute in a different way.

He was also previously the director general of social care in local government and care partnerships and a member of the NHS Management Board.

Behan appeared in the September/October 2016 edition of NHE, speaking about the way services and staff satisfaction levels could improve.
