Difficult decisions

Anyone who ever thought the Safe & Sustainable review process could lead to a calm and orderly reconfiguration of children’s heart surgery into fewer units, as virtually the whole medical profession recommends, has had a wake-up call over the past few weeks.

A combination of local campaigning, incomplete and inaccurate data, court decisions and high-profile interventions (and resignations) has turned the whole process into something of a shambles, when what it needs is clarity and professionalism.

This process has dragged on far too long already.
