NICE has won a good deal for the NHS and good drugs for skin cancer sufferers by holding off on draft approval for two expensive medicines until the manufacturers acceded to requests for a discount on them.
NICE is a complex organisation with precise ways of working – it’s not as simple as someone there deciding to play hardball and winning, of course. But the fact that patients could now get access to these drugs, without having to turn to the Cancer Drugs Fund – itself only available in England – has got to be good.
