Excuses?
Nicholson’s evidence to the health select committee saw him defend his role as leader of the NHS, but many are unhappy with his accountability for the deaths at Stafford hospital.
Sir David’s explanation for why he had literally no idea what was going on there is that there were many other hospitals to oversee, targets to hit and reorganising the NHS.
While this is undoubtedly true, it comes across as a poor excuse for the terrible failings in care and the wider system. If his remit was too large, or complex, then why was this not raised? Why did it take such a huge scandal to demonstrate the inherent leadership problems within the health service?
