Facing up to the challenge
New funding has been announced to drive forward research in one of the largest health challenges to face our elderly population: dementia.
On World Alzheimer’s Day, the health service and the public must do more to speed up progress in tackling the condition, as well as ensuring advice and support are available for those who can spot the early signs in friends or family.
Earlier this week, Alzheimer’s Research UK warned against drug companies redrawing from research following a series of disappointing trials of new treatment options. The investment announced today will hopefully be matched with other funding, so that research continues in this vital field.
The incidence of the condition is set to rise, so there is no way we can shy away from the tough challenges dementia presents. Increasing awareness, discussion and most importantly, funding, is the only way forward.
