Missed opportunity?
The Government has decided to scrap – or at least postpone – plain packaging for cigarettes, after a long battle between charities, the health sector and tobacco companies.
The move has been met with disappointment from many, who had hoped the UK’s history of groundbreaking legislation to tackle smoking would motivate the Government to follow in Australia’s footsteps.
Smoking remains one of the largest preventable threats to public health, so it is difficult to understand why this has failed to go through. What will the long-term cost be of this missed opportunity?
