Misuse of freedom
The roll-out of personal health budgets has come under criticism by the media for the possibility that NHS funding could be spent on less traditional forms of treatment, such as music or dance lessons.
This ‘misuse’ of the programme is controversial, especially at a time when funding is being squeezed and other treatments are being rationed.
Will there be effective controls in place to ensure such misuse is prevented?
It would offer patients far more freedom over their own care, and evidence published today indicates that it could deliver savings and reduce hospital admissions.
