More trusts choose NHS Direct to run NHS 111 service

NHS Direct, which is competing against other providers to run the replacement NHS 111 non-emergency health advice service for trusts around the UK, has had more success in being selected.

It is now the preferred provider for NHS South East London, which covers Bromley, Greenwich, Lambeth, Lewisham, Southwark and Bexley, as part of a consortium with two not-for-profit social enterprises, Bromley Healthcare and Grabadoc.

The news follows selections that have also seen it named preferred provider in south west London, north Essex, Somerset, and Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.

Following concern from the BMA and the ambulance network of the NHS Confederation, an earlier deadline for the introduction of NHS 111 was extended by the Department of Health.

Nick Chapman, chief executive of NHS Direct, said in a statement: “We are delighted to have been selected as the preferred provider to deliver the new 111 service for South East London, working in partnership with Bromley Healthcare and Grabadoc, which are both not for profit social enterprises.

“We are looking forward to working with our local partners to provide a safe and effective service for the population of South East London.”
