Nearly two-thirds of NHS trusts require improvement – CQC

The majority of inspected NHS trusts have received a ‘requires improvement’ rating from the Care Quality Commission (CQC), according to papers put before their latest board meeting.

Figures published ahead of the meeting on 20 April show that the CQC has now inspected 162 NHS trusts, of which 100 (62%) have been rated ‘requires improvement’.

They have now inspected all non-specialist acute trusts. Of the trusts with a published provider rating, 70 out of 103 were rated as ‘requires improvement’, 21 were ‘good’, 10 were ‘inadequate’ and only two were ‘outstanding’.

The CQC’s most recent ‘requires improvement’ notice was given to North Lincolnshire and Goole FT, which it said was failing to maintain improvements after being taken out of special measures in 2014.

Mental health trusts had the greatest proportion requiring improvement. Out of the 37 inspected, 22 were rated as requiring improvement, 14 were good, one was inadequate and none were outstanding.

A recent report warned that NHS mental health services are failing patients.

The remaining inspections noted in the CQC’s data were of eight specialist trusts, three of which required improvement, 12 community health services, four of which required improvement, and two ambulance trusts, one of which required improvement and one of which was inadequate.

The CQC is also due to inspect how all community, mental health and acute trusts in the country are learning from patient deaths after the scandal at Southern Health.

132 NHS acute trusts are also in deficit.

CQC is not in a position to comment is it? We have been waiting just short of 4 months for our initial review report. Perhaps I should delay paying the invoice that arrived today for their services?! by a similar amount of time. No sorry I forgot, if I do I will be in trouble. Who is taking accountability for this broken, overly complex system? One of our most inept ex trainees is trumpeting fact of being accepted as a CQC inspector I did not know whether to laugh or cry. for me it just said it all

The reason why these trusts are inadequate is because they are run by business people not those with Medical knowledge! nor of what patients need. They have no idea of how to run wards, look at staffing levels or half the time how to look after staff so they can retain them! They carry grand titles and yet have no grasp of the basic needs of patients. You only have to look at the titles they give to patients. Clients are for banks, service users for hotels, etc! Someone needs the courage to bring back Matrons and Ward sisters who really are experienced Nurses and who rule the wards and the hospitals! and lose systems that only protect the backs of those who don't know what they are doing!!

This constant CQC negative press is damaging the infrastructure of the NHS beyond redemption! GP practices, for example, are closing down rapidly following CQC pressure. Once closed this puts further pressure on already hard pressed local practices. There is nothing to replace these businesses so putting the NHS in constant jeopardy. When will someone recognise that the CQC must be stopped in its tracks? We all strive hard to achieve top quality service in a caring environment. We need support and development not threats and pressure. Stop this trend before it is too late! The CQC has got too big and powerful. Some of the ways they operate are absolutely shocking. We feel that we are guilty before being charged. Not motivational for any member of a dedicated team. Even staff in the supermarkets are not managed in this demotivational manner. If the powers that be do not stop this trend now the NHS as we know it will not be around even in the short term. Doctors have been under so much increasing pressure for so long that they are no longer working safely. This is why they are emigrating, retiring or changing career in droves. They passionately loved their jobs but are now ground down by the demoralising state of the NHS.
