NHS ‘crisis point’

Source: Karen

I have nursed on the front line for 30 years and have over last five years witnessed the demise of the NHS: awfully low staff moral due to long, unsociable work hours; lack of resources; unrealistic manager targets; low staff retention/recruitment; dangerous staffing levels daily; constantly threatened by managers to do ever-increasing paperwork to the detriment of our patients care; often staying over hours unpaid to complete it.

Any nurse will tell you how burnt out and fed-up they are – we just want to care at a high standard with the staff and resources to do so. No-one seems to listen or care for the staff. As employers the NHS has lost its duty of care for its employees.

Its not just nursing. I am a health care scientist and we are working to difficult targets, have had our budgets dessimated and lost a quarter of our staff. We are unable to now provide the care we know is necessary due to PCT "redesigning" our service. After over 35years in the NHS Ive never known times as dire as these, or staff moral so low.

Nearly 9 years in the NHS and inedeed never known times as bad as now. Change of organization and job specficiation almost every year, doing a job of at least two people and upaid overtime, insecurity, not having time to neither cook healthy food, nor to excercise or connect with people dear to you. NHS is producing a depressed staff with good chances to develop CVD or obesity... And all the recommendations below are just paper based wishes: http://www.nhsemployers.org/HealthyWorkplaces/LatestNews/Pages/Newreportcallsforstrengthenedleadershiptoimprovestaffhealthandwell-being.aspx
