NHS Employers appoints new chief executive

The NHS Employers organisation has confirmed that Danny Mortimer, director of workforce and strategy at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH), has been appointed its new chief executive, replacing Dean Royles who left earlier this month.

Mortimer has spent more than 20 years working in the health service, including time as a porter and a healthcare assistant before joining the NHS regional training programme in the West Midlands.

His previous roles have included personnel manager and general manager at the Royal United Hospital, Bath, and deputy director of personnel at Brighton Health Care.

His first director post was a joint role for Royal West Sussex NHS Trust and Western Sussex PCT. He subsequently became director of HR and Organisational Development at East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust. Since 2007 he has been in his current role at NUH.

Rob Webster, chief executive of the NHS Confederation, of which NHS Employers is a part, said the appointment was excellent news for the organisation and for HR in the NHS.

“Danny was an outstanding candidate and will be a genuine asset. He brings many years of frontline HR experience and real proficiency in tackling the workforce issues currently facing the service,” he said.

“His relationships with the NHS Confederation, through the NHS Employers Policy Board, gives a good balance of fresh ideas and energy, while maintaining continuity and momentum. It’s an exciting time for the health service and NHS Employers is a key element in ensuring its future success.”

Mortimer, who will take up his new role later this year, added that it has been a privilege to be a part of the NUH board, saying the organisation is superb.

On his new appointment, he said: “I've always been impressed by the talent and commitment of the NHS Employers team, so I am truly delighted to join them as chief executive, and look forward to continuing to deliver on the ambitious agenda that is essential to progress for the health service, the people it employs, and those it serves.”

Peter Homa, chief executive at NUH, told NHE he was extremely pleased to be among the first to congratulate Danny on his new appointment.

“Danny has been instrumental in driving many developments and improvements in his seven years at NUH. We wish him every success in his new role.”

Mortimer’s predecessor Dean Royles, who is a widely respected figure in the health sector, has taken up a new role as director of human resources and organisational development at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.
