NHS finances

Source: Concerned health service worker (name supplied)

I am always frustrated when we discuss the NHS and its finances. The NHS has no money due to very poor management over the last few years. IT systems that are useless; PFIs; reorganisation after reorganisation; new and more regulatory bodies; shadow organisations whilst old ones take a year to disestablish; premises sold cheaply to developers; poor tendering – the list could go on and on.

This is our money – taxpayer money – and [now there is] yet more distress for the ordinary person – hikes in taxes; loss of jobs (usually front line); takeover firms (at great cost); charging for some services; yet we continue on the vein that seems to have got us into more debt.

The NHS has improved in many ways – we are more technical and the advances in care are fantastic. It is over-managed and over-processed, and the future will continue to be grim if we continue to follow failing policies – just like banking and just like the EU etc.

yes, we all see and recognise this day in day out. but there is little vocalisation of the reality we all see. and what is most important, no leadership to challenge. in three ways, we do not have approachable leaders, we do not associate to challenge, and there is 'leadership' by default to system change rather than active management of problems. root and branch are stifled, even health select ctee reports run into the sand. the solution, is not system change, its good leadership. and the end to double speak; £20b.savings vs NHS growing funding, there is a credability gap which is again unchallenged! so who is going to lead the NCB and Monitor, leaders or sheep?
