Offsetting bureaucracy
Jeremy Hunt has highlighted the need to cut bureaucracy in the NHS, despite the Francis report identifying a number of recommendations that would require new laws or regulations.
And for every piece of bureaucracy which is introduced, the health secretary has pledged to offset this by reducing more.
The amount of time medical professionals have to spend dealing with paperwork does eat into the level of care they can deliver to patients – the real reason they are there.
But as with all Government announcements regarding regulation, there should also be caution. Much of the current regulation is in place to protect patients and to ensure high standards of care. Removing this too recklessly could prove dangerous.
