Preventing overrides
As part of a new push to increase the number of organs available for donation, NHSBT has highlighted the shocking statistic of families who override the deceased’s wishes.
There are many factors which contribute to the low proportion of organs that actually end up being used; not enough people on the register, death outside a hospital, damaged organs.
But preventing a registered donor from providing organs to someone desperately in need seems like the issue which could most easily be tackled. A public education campaign is sorely needed to help people understand the need to donate, and to encourage donors to inform their family and friends of their wishes.
