Simply unsustainable
The situation at Mid Staffordshire has gone from bad to worse, with all involved agreeing that the trust is both clinically and financially unsustainable. It may only be a matter of time now before Monitor recommends special administration, and sets about transferring services to larger hospitals.
Similar circumstances are currently affecting a number of trusts, but there is generally less acceptance of the severity of the factors involved. Mid Staffs has gone beyond the boundaries of denial or avoidance, and it is this transparency that will allow the best course of action to be chosen.
The conclusion of this openness is due in the coming weeks, with the publication of the long awaited Francis inquiry into failings of care at the trust.
These lessons must be learnt so that such a tragedy is never repeated.
