Some will seize on today’s data showing that an ever-grater proportion of procedures paid for by the NHS are being carried out by private providers.
The idea that the NHS is being privatised has taken thorough hold.
But others will say that if private providers, competing on quality with NHS ones, are convincing commissioners that patients will benefit – and patients, obviously, are still getting treatment free at the point of need – then where is the problem?
