Thinking ahead
The paediatrics workforce gap appears to be widening, despite the need for increased numbers of consultants. The RCPCH has called for a long-term approach to be taken to workforce planning, with moves taken towards greater integrated care, rather than a simple reduction in the number of training posts available.
Too often changes are made based on levels of demand and supply that are certain to change in the future, or on a cost-saving basis.
Getting the right number of skilled staff in the NHS is crucial, particularly as we seek to introduce seven-day working. But is there enough clear planning and guidance in place to achieve this?
